I have to write something else aside from the Plane Crash.

GOOD NEWS!

The Office and 30 Rock are being renewed by NBC for another season.

Amy Poehler and the creators of The Office are coming out with a new Office-inspired documentary style comedy show that will take place in a setting of local government offices in Indiana.

Amazing!

Reflecting on the Hudson River Plane Crash

I’m going to be very self-centered for just a minute. Please bear with me.

Here I am sitting in my office just two blocks  from the Empire State Building. Less than two miles away, a plane crash landed into the Hudson River one hour ago. I had no idea that it happened. I didn’t know anything until I got a call from my Mom in MD.

If that plane had only been off-course just a little bit, I could have been right in its path. I heard sirens all afternoon around my office, but I had no clue what they were for until I got the call.

How is it possible for something so colossal to happen so close to me without me even noticing? I’m sitting here at my computer trying to find live shots of something that is only a couple of blocks away.

I feel like this is supposed to change my life in some way, but I don’t think it will. Would it have been different if 100 people had died? I don’t know.

We’ll see what happens, but I have a hard time just moving on from this and saying “it can only happen in New York.”

Update: Walking through the streets of Manhattan this evening was surreal. How was it possible that an airbus 32o was floating in the river, and you couldn’t tell anything was wrong?

Is it a sign of strength that this city can withstand so much? No. It’s a sign that this city has no heart. Nobody is phased by disaster. Nobody stops to help someone out. Nobody smiles or says hello.

It’s sad.

US Airways Plane Crashes into Hudson River

A US Airways plane has just made an emergency crash landing in the Hudson River. Apparently the Airbus 320 flew through a flock of birds, had engine problems, and caused the pilot to try to return to La Guardia airport. They were not able to make it back to the airport, and they landed in the Hudson River.

There are no reports of injuries as of now, but it only happened a few minutes ago. I’m at 34th and Lexington, and I have heard a lot of sirens over the last ten minutes.

For years I have been wondering about the part of the pre-flight safety presentation about the water landings. I never believed that a plane could crash into the water, and people could survive. I guess I have been proven wrong.

Always pay attention to the safety movie!

Update: It appears that all passengers and crew have been safely removed.

Update: The sirens in Midtown Manhattan are not stopping. There is a lot of activity in NYC right now due to the place crash.

Take a Break from Israel

I have been writing a lot about Israel, and I think I need to take a break for my sake, and for yours. The last thing I’m going to mention about Israel for now is a link to the IDF YouTube Channel which has some very interesting videos about what is going on right now in Gaza.

But it’s time to write about something else already!

This Monday marks the Obama Inauguration. Many of us have worked very hard over the last year to make this a possibility, and it is finally happening!

Barack Obama has a lot of work ahead of him. I have supported him for a long time, but that does not mean I will give him a free ride. I have a high expectations for the man, and he’s going to have to put in a lot of hours and make some tough decisions if he wants to keep my respect.

I can’t imagine a scenario where I would regret voting for Barack Obama (see Sarah Palin), but I want to continue to be proud of my choice. I want to keep my Obama pin on my bag, and my calendar on the wall. (for the record, the calendar was a gift – and sorry, there are no swimsuit shots!)

So that’s what I have to look forward to: Goodbye George Bush, stay away Sarah Palin, and a new amazing President.

The Need for a Sovereign Palestine

What I have feared would come in the next couple of years seems to be here already. I have been warning my right wing Zionist friends that if there is not a two-state solution for Israel and the Palestinians soon, then the new demand that is going to be made is for a single country with two peoples. This is my nightmare.

For too long, Palestinians have been living without the basic Human Rights that many of us take for granted. Forget about their living conditions that could be easily improved with a little help from their oil-rich Arabian “friends.” I’m talking about the basic right of citizenship. Children have been born into refugee camps in the West Bank and Gaza, and are refused the right to self-determination. They are refused the right to be citizens of a country. Israel will not have them, and there is currently not autonomous Palestinian State.

This war has prompted people to think twice about the possibility for a Palestinian State to exist side-by-side with Israel. People are saying that Arab countries who would have otherwise agreed to a two-state solution are now losing credibility with their populations. Experts are saying that Israel will never be able to trust the elements of Hamas in Gaza to stop attacking Israeli civilians, and that creating a police presence in Gaza is the only way to create peace.

The reason for Israel’s existence was to create a safe-haven for the Jewish people. If Jews  no longer constitute a majority of Israeli citizens (which they would not be if all residents of Gaza and West Bank were given citizenship), the State of Israel as we know it will be over.

The Israeli government must do everything in its power to arrive at a two-state solution. The Israeli public must cry out in demands for an immediate end to this impasse. Jews around the Diaspora must rally behind this cause.

It is not the leftists and the peaceniks that should be demanding a two-state solution. Hawks and right wing Zionists must realize that this is the only option for Israel to survive. The status quo has been going on long enough, and it will come to an end one way or another.

It is up to us whether we have an independent Palestine comprising of Gaza and the West Bank, or an Israel that will no longer be Jewish.

One hundred thousand people can die, and people will ignore it. War is something that happens to countries – not people. The bullshit will continue spreading until someone steps forward to stop it. Love and pease should not be cliche’s that are mocked and disregarded. The downfall of all humanity will come at the hands of those who don’t appreciate humanity. How much suffering will it take? How much greed can exist? Who needs to steal 50 billion dollars? People need to understand one another. People need to listen to one another. People need to tolerate and respect one another, even if it seems that their differences are significant. Dialogue. Discussion. Collaboration. Demonstrations of love and kindness.

Orthodox Community Must Disown Bernie Madoff

As an Orthodox Jew, all I have to say is that I’m embarrassed of Bernie Madoff, and hope that all of the non-Jews out there can realize that he is not representative of who we are. Orthodox Jews are not greedy bastards willing to sell-out their own friends in order to buy another house in Florida. He disgusts us.

Unfortunately, I have not heard enough criticism of Madoff from Orthodox leaders. Nobody has come out and said that he is no longer welcome in our community, and that people like him can get the hell out!

What disturbs me, however, is that the Orthodox community doesn’t have much of a problem speaking out against Gays and Lesbians who want to be a part of the community. People who have done nothing to hurt anyone else, and are simply living a lifestyle that is different from the mainstream Orthodox community. These innocent people are discriminated against in almost every corner of the Jewish community.

Attention Rabbis and Community Leaders: Leave these honest and respectable GLBT Jews alone, and work on kicking out those lying, cheating heterosexual old white stealing men!
